Dummies Guide to Lacrosse
How the Game is
Played
Men's lacrosse is a contact game played by ten players: a goalie, three
defensemen, three midfielders and three attackmen. The object of the
game is to shoot the ball into the opponent's goal. Like most other sports,
the team scoring the most goals wins.
Each team must keep 3 defenders and a goalie on the defensive half of
the field, and 3 attackmen on the offensive side of the field. The
midifielders can roam the field in whatever way they like.
Collegiate games are 60 minutes long, with 15-minute quarters, high
school games are 48 minutes long, with 12-minute quarters, and youth
games are 32 minutes long, with eight-minute quarters. Each team is
given a two minute break in between each quarter.
The team that wins the coin flip gets to choose which side of the field they
will defend first, and teams switch sides between each quarter. Each
team also gets two timeouts per half.
The players then take their position on the field; three defenders plus the
goalie in the defensive box, three attackmen in the offensive box, and 3
midfielders at midfield. One midi is placed at each wing, and one in the
center for the face-off.
